Hi there & thanks for linking to my blog post!
RispondiEliminaI'm sure you know both Linux & Nokia do come from Finland - and I'm proud of both of them (though Nokia could do a bit better on open source -wice)
And Openmoko's not doing bad either, SHR is a nice distribution and some great steps are taken all the time, see http://risto.kurppa.fi/blog/great-news-from-the-openmoko-community/
Hi Risto!
RispondiEliminaI'm a long time follower of Planet Openmoko news (in which all of your posts are echoed). I was willing to buy a Freeruunner, but was somewhat disappointed by both the software side (slow progress, multiple distributions) and the hardware side (large gap with state-of-the-art hardware, battery issues, no more GTA03, etc).
I realized that a post-Freerunner fully open-source phone is yet to come. I am willing to buy a "tainted kernel" N900 (already bought a Beagleboard which has closed-source 3D-acceleration and DSP), because since the first OpenMoko-based phone I did not yet find a reasonable solution.
Yes, Nokia could do better on the open-source side (and the Maemo 5 SDK is somewhat weird to install and use, apparently even worse than the old brain-damaged Symbian SDK).
The Maemo ecosystem easily outnumbers the OpenMoko - the N900 IMHO will be a true challenge to developers world. Sounds like the OpenMoko time is near to expiring.
RispondiEliminaBut I don't expect my word be taken as gold. In a few years the scenario could radically change. Now, with the N900 coming, I just feel I have even less reasons to try an OpenMoko.
It has been a hard world for those -like me- searching for an open source phone "on which I'll have my softwares running".
Thank you for your comment.
